Tea for two! A little girls second birthday party

Growing up I can remember feeling the MOST excited ever for birthdays and holidays. It was just SO much fun and my mum used to go all out for decorations.  I have taken that and ran with it! Every holiday and birthday is an opportunity to create an amazing atmosphere for the kids imaginations to go wild.  My son has been obsessed with Firefighters for absolutely ever so every year he wants a firefighter party (check out this drive thru fire station I made him!) so I was excited for my daughters second birthday for something a little different.  She is obsessed with tea parties so I though it would be a cute idea to throw a tea party for her. Tea for TWO – its perfect!

The Balloons

I decided to go for an array of pastel balloons. I made a fun balloon column by the stairs using balloon garland tape.  Honestly, if you havent used this type of tape yet I highly recommend it!  All you do is blow up balloons (I either get a mixed size bag or a few additional large balloons) in various sizes and pull the knot through the holes in the tape.  I also convinced my sister to blow up about a million balloons that we scattered across the house too!  All kids love running through a whole pile of balloons!

On to the Tea

No tea Party is complete without TEA! We served decaf tea and party sandwiches out of china tea cups. Yes, I know what you are thinking – Are you crazy its kids they will break it! I know, i know. BUT my mother only has about 150 tea cups and saucers buried at her house so I raided her stash and used some to serve the tea and then others as decoration.

What kind of sandwiches did I make? I took direction from typical party sandwiches but made them more kid friendly, including:

  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Ham and cheese
  • Roast beef
  • Cream cheese and cucumber
  • Cream cheese and jam (I know if sounds awful but every kid LOVES this sandwich!)

Tea Party Decorations

Creating a tea party was just so fun! I put out flowers using a teapot as a vase, had flower petals and (fake) strings of pearls decorating the table and of course oodles of ribbons tied in bows around chairs! I also thought it would be fun to make large (HUGE actually – think 20″ by 30″) tea cups for the party.

To make the large decoration:

  • I got pieces of foam core board from the dollar store as the base and used some really awesome paper from a Cricut Mystery Box
  •  I used my Cricut to cut a simple teacup image using an image in design space. However, since it was so large I needed to slice the image into multiple sections and print separately.
  • I then glued everything down using a spray adhesive
  •  Once dried, I cut around the image using Cricuts True control blade. I have used my husbands exacto knife but its harder to control than a proper crafting knife

Tea Cup Cake

I decided to really lean into the theme of the party and make a watermelon tea cup cake using fruit!  I was able to do this by:

  • Take a mini watermelon and cut about a half an inch (or less) of the bottom off. Just enough so it doesn’t roll
  • Cut the top quarter of the watermelon off (enough to make an opening for the “cup”)
  • Scoop about half of the watermelon fruit out off the watermelon.
  • Take the top portion you cut off and cut the top half of that off. You will be left with a slice of watermelon about half an inch thick
  • Cut that piece to size for a handle (Mine was a little less than half) and secure it with toothpicks
  • Use the remaining half piece to make a spout and attach with toothpicks
  • Fill with your favourite fruits!

My daughters toddler tea party birthday was a huge hit!  She absolutely loved all of the decorations!  Especially the very large tea cup wall decorations made by using my Cricut. The tea party went so well and she loved being at a big table drinking tea with her family and stuffed animals!

Happy Crafting!
