Cricut Crafting with your Toddler! (Making a Monkey Shirt)

As you can tell I absolutely love being creative and making everything my kids want (and things they donโ€™t know they want!).  The only problem is, I donโ€™t want to lose time with the kids while I am off using my Cricut to make custom items for them so I have started to incorporate my son helping on projects that are for him.  So when he asks for a monkey on his shirt, we can design it together!

Picking the Design in Design Space:

  • Pull up design space, search for the image and let your kiddo choose the image!  (I usually filter the results to make sure he is choosing an appropriate one)
  • Once you have selected an image then ask your child to choose what shirt they want it on

TIP: I have started buying blanks from a wholesale vendor (one in each color) as it is cheaper than plain color from popular stores and it makes for the perfect base

Choosing the Colours:

  • This is one of my sons favourite parts! I like to take him over to the drawer with all of my HTV and he can choose the colours he wants the image to be.
  • I usually refer back to the image on the computer and the shirt color to help him understand what he is asking for.

Prepping the Materials/Cutting:

  • Have your child โ€œorganizeโ€ the rolls while you are busy cutting the HTV to size
  • Once the material is on the mat, have your kiddo use a brayer to press the material down
  • Watch it cut!  I think everyone finds this part fascinating!
  • While it is cutting/son distracted I prep the shirt

Iron on (AKA snack and watch time)

  • I usually pull over a chair so he can watch/have a snack while I do this part.
  • As I place the design I will ask where exactly he wants it on the shirt.
  • I talk about the different colours we are using and how they layer to make the image
  • The HTV I use is cool peel, so once it is fully cool I let him peel off the transfer sheet which he loves doing!

I absolutely love spending time crafting with my son and he gets so creative with what he wants it is adorable.  Do you incorporate your kids into your Cricut world?
