A Guide to buying a Cricut in Canada

I have been an avid crafter for as long as I can remember, mainly focusing my creativity towards sewing. So when Cricut came out with the maker which can be used to cut fabric I knew it would be a fantastic addition to my crafting!

As I started to research the best places to buy a Cricut machine and accessories I noticed there was very little information on how to buy a Cricut in Canada.  It is completely different buying in Canada than in the US, the stores we have are different.  If we buy from across the border we need to factor in exchange rates and duties. Also, in Canada we don’t have the same coupon and discount codes as our friends south of the border (it is much more expensive if you don’t read below about the cheapest way).  If you are interested in buying a Cricut machine and accessories in Canada please read on. I have combined all of the research and knowledge I gathered from my hunt below.  I have listed what websites/in person stores it is available and HOW to get the best price including coupon codes where possible.

Choosing where to buy a Cricut machine?

Buying from Cricut.com:

  • The prices across the border are always better than we find up here however there is a ton of math involved to see if it is actually worth it (updated with 2023 info!). A few factors to consider:
    • Exchange rate: The Cricut website recently started showing their products in CAD currency (when on the Canadian website) so when you are considering it as an option you no longer need to figure out what the exchange rate will be when you buy it!!
      • TIP: The website still defaults to the US site so make sure you are viewing the Canadian site to ensure you are seeing prices in CAD currency (Click here for the link to the Canadian site)
    • Taxes/ duties/shipping cost: The base price INCLUDES taxes and duties and there are always options for free shipping.  If you are a Cricut Access Premium member (Wondering if Cricut Access is right for you? Click here.) shipping is free over $50 and many times they have sales that include shipping over $100 – check before you buy!
    • GETTING THE MOST FOR YOUR PURCHASE:
      • Coupon codes: You can apply a discount code on your order in addition to your Cricut 10% or 20% access discount (see below for details). If you are a Cricut access member then each season you get a new discount code for $10 off materials and free shipping using this link!
        • The current code for access members is SUMMER10
        • If you are on facebook, joining the Official Cricut group has a group discount code that is usually quite good! (Pro tip – join the group if you buy a Cricut – its a fantastic community!)
        • Sign up for Cricut emails and get a $10 off discount code!
      • Bundles & Sales: It can be cheaper as they do frequently have sales or you can buy a bundle to include the materials, accessories and tools you need.
      • Cricut Access: If you subscribe to Cricut access (~$10/month subscription to the Cricut library – see our post for more details on this access) then you receive 10% off including machines or 20% off if you are a premium member!

    • Arrival time: Shipping takes usually 3-5 days
    • Check the box: Check what is included in the box!  Machines do typically come with a few accessories like mats and a blade
    • Accessories/Tools: If you are ordering accessories then consider if a bundle may be right for you! (not sure what else you need – check out this post!)
  • NOTE: If you are buying from the Cricut website in Canada, BEFORE you check out make sure you are on the Canadian site or it will not let you check out (Click here for the link to the Canadian site)

Buying on Amazon.ca Cricut Store

  • They have an entire Cricut Store carrying the majority of cricut products
  • You get free shipping & have the option to pay with credit card points if you have that option linked to your amazon account (who doesn’t love to pay with points!)
  • However, you do not get the 10% off machines you would if you ordered through the Cricut website directly using your Cricut access.
    • What is Cricut Access? If you subscribe to Cricut access (~$10/month subscription to the Cricut library – see our post for more details on this access) then you receive 10% off including machines on Cricut.com
  • In general, I do find purchasing machines and bulk supplies cheaper from Cricut.com but things like tools and accessories can be cheaper on the Cricut Store (and usually super fast delivery!).
  • In 2023, I have noticed that the EasyPress prices on Amazon sometimes dip down to be absolutely comparable or cheaper to buying directly from Cricut (paired with access)

Buying at Michaels:

  • They have a ton of Cricut items in store and on display so if you are someone who likes to go in and see things in person, this is a fantastic option.
  • However, their coupons don’t work on Cricut items (not just machines accessories as well) and they don’t go on sale so this is a more expensive option.
  • They do carry the new generation of machines (the Maker 3 & Explore 3)

Buying at Costco:

  • For Costco members this is a great option, they recently expanded their selection (Maker, Joy, foil tool and 9X9 EasyPress) so this is an option for buying machines (no accessories) if they have the one you want in stock.
  • The main downside is they only carry a standard bundle so if you wanted the everything or essentials bundle then you will not be able to get this.
  • The price is arguably the best you will find locally in a store (Cricut.com is best price overall – by far when using a sale and Cricut access) however I am now seeing Amazon.ca comparable prices and more selection.
  • Another bonus is their return policy, if there is something wrong with the machine you have up to a year to return it.

Decide on your Cricut Machine

There are five different types of Cricut machines/ products you can get.

Below is just an overview of the machine – are you the type who wants to know more??  Check out our ultimate guide that helps you pick the machine to match your craft style. It details what you can do with the machine, compares price points and highlights helpful tips.
  1. The Cricut Maker: This pro-level machine is compatible with ALL of the Cricut blades (cutting, debossing, engraving etc.) and can cut a wide range of materials including fabric.
  2. The Cricut Explore Air 2: This mid-range machine is compatible with the most popular blades and materials
  3. Cricut Joy: This machine is compact and great for small projects (Check out our post on the Cricut Joy for more information on what it can do)
  4. Heat Presses: A heat press is used to transfer heat required material (Heat Transfer Vinyl & Infusible Ink) to the blank (such as a shirt or mug).
    • Mug Press: Make microwavable/dishwasher safe custom mugs using infusible ink (find out all of the details of this new product and how to get it in Canada here!)
    • Easy Press: This is FAR superior to using a household iron and honestly a must if planning on making a lot of shirt, totes etc. Comes in three sizes with the most common being the 9×9 inch
  1. Cricut Lights: Cricut has recently been releasing LED multiway adjustable lights for your craft room

What else do you need?

Choose your Cricut Accessories

Once you decide on your Cricut machine you will need to figure out what Cricut tools, materials and accessories you will need to get started! Trust me, once you have  your machine you will be itching to get started right away

If you are in Canada and thinking of buying a Cricut machine I have found that by far Cricut.com have the best prices for when you are buying a Cricut machine in Canada except the EasyPress, as Amazon.ca is comparable, if not lower. While you need to wait a few days before getting the machine in hand it is arguably the best deal and you can apply your Cricut Access and coupon codes for further discounts. Hope this helps you in your Cricut buying journey!

Happy Buying!
