Crafty Mom MUST HAVES!

One of our greatest joys in life is being creative with our kids and for our kids. I know that I speak for Jo as well, but I am CONSTANTLY thinking of new ideas or things to make together! To be able to do this, we have cultivated a collection of items that allow us to be able to create things easily and without having to run out to the store every time. We started out with sewing machines on our dining room tables and have quickly escalated to full fledged craft rooms with everything you can possibly think of! Now we obviously don’t expect everyone to become as addicted to crafting as we are (but once you get started I’m sure you’ll find you’ll keep wanting to make more and more!) but we figured we would share a list of items that we ALWAYS keep on hand to be able to create fun and memorable things for our kids.

Below is a list of what we consider Crafty Mom MUST HAVES to help those of you who are wanting to delve into the world of creativity with your kids! We split it ino two sections, the first is ideas for mom craft areas (to be able to create shirts, costumes etc) and the second is for a kid craft areas (to allow their creativity to shine) and what you’ll need to make them a successful space!

What do I need to create the perfect CRAFTY MOM SPACE?

A designated Craft Supply area

While you don’t need to have a full craft room, you do need (in our opinion) a designated area where everything is readily available! Before I had my large craftroom in the basement, I had a DIY craft cart that I kept all of my crafting essentials on and ready to use.

If you only have a smaller area, or even just a closet space, something like one of these AMAZING craft carts from Amazon or Michael’s can be absolutely CLUTCH for organizing supplies! All you’d need to do is roll it out to the dining table and get your craft on! Because lets face it, if you need to dig around drawers to find various materials or supplies you probably will get frustrated before you even start!

What SUPPLIES do I need?!

Here is a comprehensive list of what we believe every mom’s craft space should include:

  • Cardstock and design paper in a range of colours and patterns to make cards, banners, larger than mat projects, etc.
  • Glues in various forms from glue pen, glue tape, to a glue gun or even spray adhesive
  • Paints in all rainbow colours, paint brushes (something like this kit has it all!)
  • Glitter (Dollarama has a great selection) because kids LOVE anything with glitter on it and frankly – we do too!
  • Stickers (again…Dollarama or Dollar Tree are the go-to stores for these!), this is a great way to personalize cards for people or adding sticker sheets to kids valentines is a fun way to add a custom element
  • Blanks of various things like:
  • a CRICUT!! with supplies and accessories (vinyls, htv, infusible ink transfer sheets and pens, sticker paper etc…) Not sure what you need? Check out this post on accessories
  • a pegboard to organize and hang items for easy use!
  • a craft table/surface to work on
  • Reused items from around the house as crafting blanks like: empty coffee containers (I use the NesCafe Espresso Gold jars for my pens!!) , those Costco mixed nut containers, Tetley tea canisters (can be relabeled as pretend play items for kids kitchen!) and whatever else you can find!!

What do I need to create the perfect KID CRAFT SPACE?

One thing that Jo and I have both found to be incredibly useful is to have a designated KID CRAFT SPACE as well as our Crafty Mom Space! This is where we keep all of the kid safe items and everything readily available for the kids to help themselves to (almost) everything.

SUPPLIES!

Here is what we have in our KID CRAFT SPACES that make them a huge success!

  • Crayola has an amazing all inclusive art kit that literally has everything you would need to get started! It has: 64 Crayola crayons, 20 Crayola short coloured Pencils, 40 Crayola washable markers, and 15 large sheets of paper!
  • On amazon, there are quite a few great options for kits that have beads, pipe cleaners, pom poms, popsicle sticks, foam sheets, and many other awesome things!
  • Construction paper
  • kid appropriate safety scissors
  • School age workbooks
  • Crayola Paints (they’re our favourites and washout of clothes so easily!!!)
  • Smock to attempt to keep clothes clean (haha).
  • Paintbrushes
  • Pegboard! Our all time favourite organization system! While our go-to is the IKEA Skadis system, there are many different types of pegboards and accessories available on Amazon.
  • Kids table and chairs (Check Facebook Marketplace for a good deal!)
