IKEA pegboard

Cricut Organization using IKEA SKADIS Pegboard

I first created my giant IKEA pegboard a few years ago when I first bought my Cricut. Not necessarily because I had a ton of supplies, tools and materials but because pegboards are such a perfect organization tool for a craft room I know it would suit the space. For me, I find I get super inspired by the materials I have and being able to see some of my new vinyl rolls or new Cricut materials helps inspire me.  I use my pegboard not only to hold my tools but also as an ever evolving project board. I put materials for projects I am about to make on the board so they do not get lost in a bin or drawer for me to forget about.  As a mum, I do not get much time to craft and the time I have I want to make the most of. Having everything that is essential for crafting (Cricut weeding tools, glue, rulers, mats, etc.) easy to find and grab makes crafting much easier to jump into.  Having a clear workspace is essential to my creativity, if my table is cluttered I feel like I cannot focus entirely on the craft at hand.  Nothing is worse than going to craft but there are tools and bits of supplies everywhere.  With two kids I donโ€™t have a lot of time to craft so when I do I want to maximize the time I do have.  This is why I find it key to have everything organized and lets be honest it looks so pretty!

Creating this giant pegboard is one of my favourite parts of my craft room – below I detail how I was able to make this incredibly large creation as well as tips for Cricut Organization using IKEA SKADIS Pegboard!

How to make a giant Pegboard

After doing a lot of research on various pegboard solutions to house my various Cricut materials and tools I decided to go with the Ikea SKADIS series. There were a few reasons 1) size of pegboards (you can combine them to make virtual any size you want!) 2) style of pegboard I wanted 3) all of the incredible accessories! This was the BIGGEST factor for me.   There are shelves, hooks, letter holders, baskets, cup holders, etc.

Vinyls on pegboard
  • Inventory what you have. Pull out all of your craft supplies. I mean EVERYTHING. Go into every cupboard, drawer and basket you have and lay it all out.  Once you get over the shock of everything you have start to put it in categories (make a pile of all of your ribbons, another of your vinyl etc.).
  • Choose your pegboard size: My advice is simple. Choose what size you want and then go larger โ€“ double it! I know, you are probably thinking I am crazy but can you really tell me you found ALL of the craft supplies in your house and that you will NEVER buy anymore craft supplies? Exactly. Buy bigger than you think you need.

Setting it up: Overall setting up the IKEA SKADIS pegboard is not that difficult but it can be a bit daunting to set up a large wall of them.

  • Make sure it is level: We decided to pull out the carpenter chalk to mark a line on the wall to make sure it was level
  • Use wall anchors: Supplies are surprisingly heavy so make sure you get a heavy enough anchor for the job.
  • Make sure they are spaced right. Page #7 of the manual has a spacing chart for combining pegboards. Having them spaced 6.5″ apart between the screw holes in the brackets for side by side and 22 1/4″ for stacking stacking one on top of the other.

TIP: These pegboards allow for a little bit of adjustment once the bracket is up and we found it easiest to start at the top right pegboard to allow for the boards to get flush with each other.

Choosing your accessories

  • Choose your accessories: Choose the accessories based on what you have. I really like:

Note: I have seen a lot of people use the IKEA bag holder for vinyl rolls but I found the holes were too small and I needed to re-wrap every roll which only worked for small bits and not large quantities.  I just donโ€™t have time to fuss with that.

Benefits of a Pegboard

  • Clear space, clear head: I find a clear work space sparks creativity โ€“ a blank canvas!
  • If you donโ€™t put things back where they are supposed to go that is OK, it will still be easy to find!
  • You wont lose track of what supplies you have.  I find with drawers I forget all of the craft supplies I have and I either end up with duplicates or not using fun supplies I have.
  • Versatile: As you get different supplies and tools your pegboard adapts

Have you discovered the amazingness that is pegboards yet?  What is your favorite part?

Happy Organizing!
