Mom Craft Room Makeover- Creating a Kid friendly crafting space!

While I longed for a kid friendly and inspiring Mom craft room, my craft zone seemed to always be in a state of chaos. (No seriously…check out the Before pic…) I would set it up and wish for the best, but it would gradually become a dumping zone of half finished projects, items that didn’t belong in a craft room, or even a collecting place for things I just didn’t know what to do with.

Sound familiar??? Well you’ve come to the right place!  Jo and I spent about a month planning, purging, wallpapering (so easy with Photowall! Read about our wallpaper experience here), and ultimately organizing my craft room into the MOST BEAUTIFUL and actually inspiring creative space that my kids absolutely love joining me in!  I swear my Cricut has been working overtime since the completion of the craft room…everything has a place and that makes creating SO much easier!!

The before...

When we started the craft room redo, we had an example of what NOT to do in a craft room. Too many things did not have a specific home, there wasn’t any distinct storage system in place, and frankly there was just too much “stuff” everywhere. Definitely not a kid safe or friendly place. It was more stressful trying to find what I needed in the chaos, that I honestly didn’t enjoy crafting here anymore. The intentions were always good, but the result was a mom who wanted to craft with her kids, but couldn’t in the cramped space where things would slide or fall…not ideal at all.

The Craft Room Planning

Jo is an exceptional planner and has the ability to visualize potential in the midst of chaos. I, on the other hand, just see the chaos. She taught me the golden rule of organization: EVERYTHING MUST HAVE A HOME! Que the ultimate craft organization tools: the Ikea Skadis pegboard and the Ikea Kallax! We figured out a home for all of the supplies I had, and then with the plan in hand, we got to the fun part: MAKING IT BEAUTIFUL!

We used Photowall’s wallpaper (if you haven’t heard of Photowall, check them out! They are an amazing Swedish company with high quality and stunning wallpapers/wall art etc!) It was so easy to apply, and created the PERFECT backdrop for creative inspiration!

The Ultimate Craft Room Organization

I couldn’t fit the 5 cube by 5 cube Ikea Kallax wall divider shelf in the space I need it, so we created a perfect Ikea Hack of a 5 cube by 4 cube shelf! We took a 2 by 4 cube, and stacked it on top of the 3 by 4 cube Kallax! We divided craft supplies by each category and placed them in their new homes!

In the bins we have:

  •  Fabric Scraps by sizes, one bin of large scraps, one bin of small scraps.
  • Art supplies: paints and paint brushes, canvases, pens, charcoal etc…
  • Cricut Vinyls, with removable, permanent, and HTV
  • Sewing supplies, threads, needles, bobbins, my embroidery attachment for my machine, patterns
  • Gift boxes and box blanks for creating
  • Blanks for vinyl and infusible ink
  • Specialty Materials
As you can see, we folded my fabric onto cardboard for easy access and it makes it so much easier to see what I actually have… and my machine is on the lower shelf, easy to grab!
In the cupboard we have stored all of my infusible ink because it’s nice and dark in there!

The Kallax works so well as a room divider and finishes the area so cleanly.

For the walls, we put up the Ikea Skadis pegboard system, which is the best organization system for smaller tools and supplies! Easy access is key, and having the tools hanging within quick reach is a must!

I can easily spin my chair and grab my weeder, scissors or whatever else I need with little effort or disruption to my creative flow. Ikea has so many accessories that are incredible for crafting tools storage, you’ll definitely be able to find what works for you! One of my all time favourite Cricut tools is the material Trimmer. I store the Trimmer on my pegboard using the paper storage U! Its so easy to grab and ready to go!

They have shelves, baskets, you name it, they’ve got it!

Crafting with kids always centers around a kid friendly table…which means that you need a large surface area for all of the great projects you’ll be making with them!

We did an Ikea craft table hack…I had a 2 by 2 Kallax that wasn’t going to be needed upstairs anymore, so we used that as part of the base of the table, and the adjustable table legs from Ikea. For the massive top (4 foot by 3 foot) we used a large piece of 1 inch thick Melamine board on top!

As you can see, there is plenty of room for me to work and for the kids to work all at the same time!!!

I often find my daughter sitting in my seat waiting for me to come and make something with her! Should I be worried that she is calling it her office already?!

I am absolutely in love with my new creative space and am excited every time I go in there! I highly recommend making your craft space something that you are proud of…it will transform your crafting confidence and inspire those around you! If you have kids, I guarantee it will make them want to be creative with you!
