Felt Board

How to make your own DIY felt board for kids

Looking for a fun and easy DIY project to do with your child? A felt board is a great way to encourage creativity and imagination. With just a few materials and some simple steps, you can create a personalized felt board that your child will love. The best part is that you can use up a ton of scraps and bits and bobs in your craft room for this project!  I had a ton of felt leftover from various projects like my sons owl costume and some flannel off cuts from crib sheets which worked perfectly! See below what I used and how I made it awesome!

Gather your materials

I like to lay everything out that I will need before I start so that I am not scrambling to find things or to need to make an emergency stop at the store!

What I used:

  • Canvas: I bought a 18″x24″ Canvas at Dollarama.  You can make it any size you want!
    • Dont have a canvas? Use thick cardboard from a delivery box or cardstock!
  • Felt sheets or flannel (felt sticks to flannel!) for the background: I used a mixture of both to use up scraps!
  • Spray adhesive: I am still super into the Elmer’s spray adhesive but any will work.
  • Felt sheets/rolls or scraps!  I do prefer Cricut brand felt as it is optimized for cutting on the machine!
  • Scissors or a Cricut to cut the felt

Making the felt board

This was so super simple and something really fun to have the kids involved!   I wanted the background to be a bit generic so that the kids can change out the “scenes” frequently. So I measured the top 2/3rds of the felt board with about an extra 2 inches around each side and cut to size. Then I sprayed the flannel fabric liberally with spray adhesive and laid the canvas on top of it. I gently pulled each side to ensure no creases and then wrapped the fabric around the back of the canvas. then I eyeballed some green space with a hill and followed the same process.

Creating felt shapes and scenes

This was the hardest part in my opinion as I was coming up with designs and then making sure I had the right size coloured piece. I had a lot of really good ideas but I did find it to be a bit overwhelming at first.

What made it easy:

  • Start with the easy stuff!  I knew I wanted the alphabet, shapes and numbers
  • If you have Cricut design space. you can search image sets!  So if you want to do a farm scene, search for a cute pig/cow etc. and then look at the full image set and it likely will give you all the other animals in the set!
  • Create large background designs such as trees and buildings (like a barn!) that can be used in many play scenes on the felt board.

Felt scene ideas

DIY felt board scene ideas:
  • Alphabet
  • Numbers
  • Shapes
  • Weather
  • Farm animals with barn
  • Outer space
  • Christmas
  • Halloween
  • Dress up dolls
  • Storybook characters (To reenact a story!)
  • Flowers blooming
  • Birthday
  • Ice cream cone counting
  • Under water
  • Facial expressions

Keeping it organized

Organizing scenes:

I got this photo storage organizer off Amazon (Michael’s sells them too!) and make one container for each felt board “scene” (such as weather).  That way the kids can open it up and have endless creative play without it getting all mixed together.

Large pieces:

For the large trees/building I created a pocket on the back of the felt board to easily keep them handy

Hope you got some inspiration for different felt board stories/felt board scenes for when you DIY your own felt board! By using your Cricut it is a great project to do with your children and one that will provide your kids with tons of entertainment!
