Add decals to everything your kid owns

This absolutely needs to be priority #1.  Especially if you have younger kids. In a sea of similar items they need a way to recognize their easily.  Custom decals that your kid helps you pick in addition to their name helps so much!

  • Backpack: I ended up adding his name to the outside but then on the inside I found this amazing project in Cricut design space that provides the child’s name and phone number if lost.
    • Note: My sons backpack was able to withstand the โ€œindependentโ€ junior AND senior kindergartener packing his own bag (and frequently washing) without any of it coming off!
  • Lunch bag: I highly suggest this because chances are the lunch bag you bought at least 5 other kids in class will have the same one. This way your kid can easily see its theirs!
  • Lunchboxes: I have about half a dozen Bento box lunch boxes and labelled them all with permanent vinyl.  While I could have easily used one of those “school labels” that I use for clothing, I decided to use my Cricut instead. I find it makes it a bit more recognizable for my kid.  PRO TIP: if you have more than one kid in school just add your last name!  Then it doesn’t matter which kid you send it with.
  • Water bottles: Honestly this one is the BIGGEST.  Use your Cricut and add custom decals.  ALL the water bottles look the same – seriously.  It’s so hard to tell them apart.
  • Clothing: I know this is a given but seriously – LABEL IT ALL.  Clothing, shoes, gloves, hats, snow pants.

Make the day memorable

First day of School sign: Create a first day of school sign! It is so fun to capture all the little things about your kid from year to year.  Who their teacher is, what they want to be when they grow up, their favourite activities.  I used a blank canvas from Dollarama, some of Cricut’s chalkboard vinyl for the background and then permanent vinyl for the lettering and embellishments.

Stickers! Make some super awesome stickers to decorate their notebooks, folders, duo-tangs etc.  I use Cricut’s sticker paper and print and cut feature (how awesome is it that they expanded the size of print & cut?!) and add on top a holographic overlay to make them super incredible!

Dress for Success

  • First Day of school shirt: Creating a first day of school shirt is such a fun way to make your kid feel special, feel confident in what they are wearing and let them know you are just as excited for them.
  • Update their existing looks: I took any shirt that was plain or my son didnโ€™t like and created fun designs on them, adding in animals, construction equipment and even turning a car into a race car by adding some simple stripes and a turbo to the back. It was a super fun project we got to do together.
  • Make it recognizable: If their jacket /snowsuit/ splash pants etc. is pretty common looking (i.e. a blue winter coat) then add a fun small embellishment either to the inside liner, or a nice pull tag for the zipper or make the hood have animal ears.  That way it will stand out to your kid a sea of other similar looking items.
