Beach Mugs

Kid friendly Mug Press projects

When Cricut came out with the mug press last summer we were intrigued. I mean, it’s a MUG PRESS – you can make endless mugs! Mandy and I talked through ‘do we buy it – do we not’. But after it sitting in our cart for about a month we couldn’t do it. The $280 CAD price tag seemed too steep for a machine with one purpose (or so we thought!).  We carried on our crafting but would constantly come up with projects that would be amazing with a mug.  So finally, we saw a sale – paired with our Cricut Access 10% off machines we did it – we finally ordered the Mug Press! Figuring, what if we do a shared custody thing where it can live at my house but you borrow it when you need it type thing.  We also ordered a healthy stock pile of mugs so that we would be set for a while. HA – boy were we WRONG.  We blew through our year supply of mugs in about 3 weeks and were constantly picking up the mug press from the other persons house.  Our worry of “not using it much” was comically wrong and we ended up ordering so many mugs that Mandy had to store them in her garage (our fav is 12 oz mugs!). Now, if you are like us and have young kids and are here to see if the mug press is worth buying then read on!  We break down all of the different projects and occasions that we use our Mug Press on so you can decide if you need to add it to your craft room!

Kid-crafted personalized Cricut Mugs

Are you wondering what types of mugs and gifts you crafty moms will make with a Cricut Mug Press? I totally get it – I was there too!  I sort of still am a bit and I have made CASES of them. Just to launch you off on your crafty journey here are some ideas of ones we have made:

  • Grandparent gift: Get your kid to scribble/draw a picture on printer paper with the infusible ink markers and transfer it to a mug! Check out how we turned our kids art into mugs with the
    Cricut mug press

    • PRO TIP: use the freehand ones – they are thicker! Make sure to date it/add their age!
  • Teacher Gifts: A lot of people think you should stay away from mugs for teacher gifts but I absolutely disagree. They usually get pretty generic mugs if any at all.  My go to mug for teachers: Add the school name and have your kid draw on it or write out their teachers name they will love it!
    • If you have them write you either need to trace it on the opposite side of the paper with the infusible ink markers or upload to design space and have the machine mirror it or it will turn out backwards!
  • Silhouette art: Take a silhouette photo of your child and add it to a mug. You can keep adding new mugs to your collection as they grow. It’s a great way to add meaningful art to your kitchen!
  • Worlds best Aunt/Uncle: If they are anything like our family then they are arguably just as proud as grandparents to sport stuff their nieces/nephews create
  • Photo Mugs: Adding a family photo is such a fun way to use your mug press!  If you don’t have a sublimation printer reach out to local small vinyl shops as many will do sublimation sheet orders for a couple of dollars
  • Matching hot chocolate mugs! Cricut has a set of 4 stackable mugs that make super cute sets. One design that spans over all 4 mugs. This is so fun for a themed night of hot chocolate or tea!

How to include your kid in making Mugs

Are you wondering HOW your kids can help make some personalized mugs? Here are some ideas of how we include ours kids in the process:

  • Kid art on Mugs: Give your kid a sheet of printer paper and the Infusible Ink pens and let them draw a beautiful picture – or scribbles! Older kids can make beautiful pictures and little ones can give your priceless drawings. This is THE perfect addition to your mug cupboard BUT this also makes the perfect grandparent gift
  • Choosing the design/colours: Picking out the design or colour infusible ink sheet is so fun as they tend to come up with very different things we would.
    • PRO tip: If you want a sense of creative input only bring out colours you want to use/narrow down the images to half a dozen
  • Prepping the mug: Kids are great at using lint rollers/taping things together etc. so this is the perfect fun activity to do together!
  • Peeling to reveal the design: This is the most dramatic part of the process and the part the kids love the most! Make sure the mug is completely cool before handing it over.

Cost for the mug press

How much does the Cricut Mug Press cost?

  • Cricut recently launched a Canadian version of their website allowing you to view all the products in CAD currency taking some of the guess work out of the pricing of their products when factoring in the exchange rate.
  • The price for the Cricut Mug Press is $279 CAD for just the machine and $310-350 CAD for the Cricut Mug press bundles when buying from Cricut’s Canadian website
  • Amazon.ca also carries the Cricut mug press and often times for a fairly competitive price! Just remember to factor in any bundle or Access discounts!  (Pro tip! The Mug Press and the Cricut Easy Press are the two items on Amazon.ca that are sometimes cheaper than from Cricut Directly)
  • Don’t forget!!  If you have Cricut Access that you get a discount of 10% when buying machines!  If you don’t have it this is a great time to sign up (Not sure if Cricut Access if right for you? This blog post details the benefits of Cricut Access so you can decide if it is worth it for you)

How much are the Cricut Mug Press materials (Mugs & Infusible Ink)?

  • The materials to make the mugs would be $1-$5 per mug depending on what size you get and if you buy in bulk or not. In addition to that you would need to buy the infusible ink sheets/pens (you can use ones you have or the ones designed for the mugs).

If you are wondering if the Cricut mug press would be a good addition to your craft room I would urge you to think of what you would make with it.  Once I had an ongoing list of mugs I would make if I had the Mug Press the decision was easy.  Personalize kid made mugs are amazing gifts and a great addition to our kitchen!
