Kids IKEA kitchen transformed into a vet clinic

Kids Vet Clinic! IKEA play kitchen transformation

We have had our IKEA DUKTIG play kitchen for a few years and they have enjoyed endless play with it! Cooking food, putting away their groceries and feeding their stuffies.  However, I was noticing the kitchen wasn’t being used as much as normal. My preference tends to lean towards upcycling things where possible so I thought let’s transform the kitchen into a kids Vet Clinic!  I used removable vinyl on my Cricut Maker to cut all the decals and accessories I found around the house.  I created (no sew!) bandaids and larger bandages, “recovery rooms” with pillows and blankets, an x-ray booth and an exam bed.  Below I have written out all the details on how to make your own pet clinic including the links to the projects in design space!

Cricut Cut Decals

I used Cricut’s removable Vinyl to create Vet Clinic decals as the base transformation of the kitchen!  I found a red cross in design space (modified heavily) with a white border and then I added a paw print in the middle.  With decals on the back (sign), sides, recovery room, x-ray room and supplies.

Vet Clinic Supplies

I used some miscellaneous bottles and jar that I had laying around from when I used a meal delivery service to create “medicine” bottles. Any plastic bottle/container will work as accessories to your kids vet clinic!

Using Cricut permanent vinyl to make the decals – I layered the red cross and paw print on top of the the white/holographic.  TIP! Wipe the area down with rubbing alcohol before applying the decals to ensure they stick properly!

Pet x-ray booth

I wanted interactive elements for the kids to play with so I made an “x-ray” booth. Using the oven so it has the clear door for them to “view” the x-rays. First, I mounted a touch light for the kids to turn on/off on the side wall and then I added a clip on the inside of the door (using a 3M strips to attach) so the kids can change out the x-rays!

To make the x-rays I found these free printable x-rays from homeschool share that are just too cute! I bought transparency sheets from amazon that work on my Inkjet printer and printed them using greyscale.

Pet Recovery Rooms

Arguably I had the MOST fun making this room! I used some scrap fabric for the floor and made a blanket and pillow as well! Using some patterned Cricut removable vinyl as “wallpaper” on a featured wall because it just seemed too fun not to! Then I scrounged around my craft room for some accessories and found a few of these small IKEA artificial succulents and thought they were perfect! Also, I found some small canvas that I painted and used some HTV scrap to decorate.

Accessories

I wanted to make a few pet bandages as no vet clinic would be complete without them! However, I didn’t want to make a career out of it so I went with the simple is best approach. I grabbed some scrap flannelette fabric from making baby blankets and created a template on design space. I had my maker cut out the material and the HTV! If you don’t have the maker you can absolutely hand cut the fabric and then use HTV to decorate them. I found velcro dots at Dollarama and used them as an easy way to close the bandaids.

The kids absolutely love the IKEA DUKTIG play kitchen transformation into this vet clinic!  Their favourite part is the pretend play x-ray booth.  The best part of removable vinyl is that it is so easy to change up the design! In 6 months once the kids have played this out I can just peel off the decals and transform it into something else!

Good luck on your IKEA kitchen transformation!
